“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,” ~ 2 Peter 3:10-11
As Peter looks to final coming of the Lord Jesus, and the events that will take place in the future, he then comes back to the present. He says if such things are going to happen (the Lord coming like a thief, the heavens passing away, the earth being burned up, etc.), then what sort of people ought we to be…in lives of holiness and godliness.
In other words, if Christ is going to come back as the judge of the world, and His justice will be a cosmic display of righteousness, then His people ought to be living lives of holiness and godliness today. How many people think that grace is a license to sin? That because they prayed a prayer or walked an aisle, it doesn’t matter how they live today? The Scriptures teach something contrary though. They teach that grace is actually freedom from sin, and because we have received the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we are now empowered to flee sin and choose holiness.
Friend, are you living like Christ is actually coming again to judge the world? Do you really want to be in the middle of sin when the skies break apart and you see your Savior?
Let us then live lives of holiness and godliness, for soon our Savior will appear. Let’s be ready for that Day.
