When Peter and John were publicly arrested for preaching the resurrection of Jesus, and released the next day, Acts chapter 4 shows us that they went to their friends and shared what had happened. Immediately they lifted their voices in prayer, and one of the requests was, "Grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness" (v.29).
Verse 31 then describes the effects of that prayer. "And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness."
One of the application points from yesterday's sermon was that we will fail miserably at evangelism and missional living if we go about it in our own strength. Here we see even the apostles needed the strength that comes through prayer and the Holy Spirit. If such was the case for them, how much for us!
I pray today that the Holy Spirit will give us boldness this week, that we may faithfully witness to the world around us about who Jesus is.
